Pete Mitchell (Tom Cruise), a plucky young aviator nicknamed "Maverick," is starting to become the best of the best. He is sent to Miramar, California, for a five-week course at a school for elite military pilots called Top Gun. Here, the excitable pilot takes on the biggest aces in the business and meets not only the flamboyant astrophysicist and flight instructor Charlie (Kelly McGillis), but also the brilliant and highly competitive fellow student "Iceman" (Val Kilmer), with whom he wages a ruthless battle for supremacy from the start. But while Maverick is haunted by the mysterious death of his father, will he be able to tame his wild nature and win not only the coveted Top Gun trophy, but also the heart of the girl he loves?
