French scientist Claude and his interpreter, cartographer David, discover a squadron of military aircraft that disappeared three decades ago. The planes are intact, they work, but there is no sign of the pilots. An old man who was the only witness claims that the sun came out at night and sang to him. Soon after, the missing Greek ship Cotopaxi is discovered in the Gobi Desert. In Indianapolis, again shortly afterwards, the control tower manages to intercept a call from two civilian airplane pilots about a UFO sighting. The state of Indiana is affected by massive power outages, and so Roy, a technician, is called in to work. It is he who experiences a UFO encounter on a deserted road. He begins to pursue it in his vehicle and the police do so along with him, but the spacecraft disappears into the night sky. Roy is fascinated by the UFO and becomes increasingly obsessed with the images that keep appearing in his mind. He sees a mountain and an unknown force is constantly making him model it out of something.
